Around the world, we see companies and locals doing everything in their power to protect the surf by hosting beach clean-ups, creating sustainably made clothing and through marine life conservation efforts. Ocean conservation is at the forefront of a lot of conversations these days, especially in beach towns life ours.
Here’s what we’re doing to keep the conversation going.

Film Viewing: ‘Sharkwater: Extinction’
We showed the film, ‘Sharkwater: Extinction’, at the shop a couple of weeks ago, to bring greater awareness to the illegal shark fin industry and all of the corruption behind it. The film looks at the journey Rob Stewart takes to bring light to the situation and focuses on how prevalent shark finning still is, even in Costa Rica. Through his work, he’s changed public policies worldwide, and focuses on educating others about the issue, for them to take action in their own communities before sharks become extinct. By showing the film, we are shedding a strong light on the illegal shark fin industry in our backyard.

Julian Schnabel x Parley Ocean Bags
When we found out Parley collaborated with Julian Schnabel to create limited edition Parley Ocean Bags with Julian’s designs, we had to have them in the shop. With Julian Schnabel’s dedication to ocean conservation, it only seemed fitting that he partner with Parley on these bags to support the work they do.
Parley is a worldwide organization created to bring together leaders, and creators eager to raise awareness for the ocean. Through beach clean-ups, product designs with well-known companies (aka partnering with adidas to create ocean plastics shoes) and discussions around the globe, they’re bringing communities together to create a more sustainable earth.
The Parley Ocean Bags (soon to be in the shop!) are home to Julian Schanbel’s famous surf paintings and every bag purchased helps Parley remove 20 pounds of plastic debris from beaches worldwide.

Ocean Conservation in Nosara
Beach Clean-ups + Awareness at Olo Alaia
Spend time at the shop with us, and you’ll see how passionate we are about bringing a greater awareness to keeping our beaches clean. We’ve hosted multiple films about ocean conservation, raised funds for local conservation efforts and remind those heading out for a surf, or off for a beach day to pick up any trash they spot on the beach. When out for a morning surf, we’re sure to pick up trash along the way, it’s in our blood to keep our beaches clean.
Costas Verdes is committed to keeping our lands pure by restoring the degraded beaches of Costa Rica. As continued supporters of Costa Verdes, we’re always in awe of the work they’ve done. The foundation has been around since 2009 and continually plants trees, creates forest covers and protects wildlife surrounding deserted beaches. With seven projects along the Pacific coast, tourists and locals alike have a hand in planting a tree to protect the beaches we play on.
Movimiento Guardianes (The Guardians of Nature) is a movement to educate and transform the lives of children across Latin America. Based in Nosara, the organization provides free environmental education programs for students for teachers to use in the classroom and outdoors. By giving a voice to youth, they’re making a difference at home.
As surfers, we believe in protecting our coastlines. And so, whether you live near an ocean, or inland, remember every little bit counts and when you take a stand for the oceans, our world becomes more sustainable.
