Coffee at Olo
At Olo Alaia, we proudly source our coffee from two family-run farms that embody the best of Costa Rican coffee craftsmanship. Ecobeneficio Jimenez, located in the Cartago province at elevations between 1550 and 1800 meters, is known for its commitment to sustainable and ecological practices. They specialize in natural and honey processing, which highlights the rich, complex flavors of their beans. From the mountains of Tarrazú, Finca La Mona provides specialty coffee that reflects the region’s ideal climate and bold flavors. Both farms share a dedication to premium quality and environmentally responsible farming, ensuring each cup of coffee we serve is exceptional.
In 2024, we launched Olo Alaia Coffee Roasters, allowing us to roast all of our coffee in-house. This enables us to have complete control over the roasting process, ensuring each batch is roasted to perfection. Every cup is then brewed by our skilled baristas, bringing freshly roasted, 100% Costa Rican coffee to the vibrant surf town of Nosara.
Coffee in Costa Rica
Costa Rican coffee, celebrated globally for its exceptional quality and unique flavor, is deeply rooted in the nation’s history and culture. Grown in the fertile volcanic soils, high altitudes, and ideal climate of central and mountainous regions, it produces some of the finest Arabica beans.
Introduced in the late 18th century, coffee quickly became Costa Rica’s most important export, transforming its economy by the mid-19th century and earning the nickname el grano de oro (the golden bean). Its profits funded infrastructure, education, and even the National Theater, laying the foundation for modern development.
Beyond economics, coffee is a cornerstone of Costa Rican life. Many families have cultivated it for generations, and regions like Tarrazú, Central Valley, and Tres Ríos are renowned for their scenic landscapes, vibrant coffee culture, and eco-friendly practices. Coffee is more than a drink—it’s a symbol of tradition, social connection, and national pride.
Costa Rica’s commitment to sustainability extends to its coffee industry, with many farms adopting organic methods and fair trade certifications. This aligns with the country’s broader goal of carbon neutrality, ensuring coffee production benefits both the environment and local communities.
